2026-10-11

Daegu Food and Sights from the Videos: Seomun Market, Halmae Mukjip, and Palgongsan Wishing Rock

2026-10-11

A guide to three places in Daegu, a city known for its local dishes, that appeared in TV shows and travel videos: Seomun Market, Halmae Mukjip, and the Wishing Rock on Palgongsan.

Daegu, a City Best Explored Through Its Food

Daegu is known in Korea for its "10 flavors of Daegu," a set of signature local dishes. Highlights include mungtigi (fresh raw beef), makchang (grilled beef or pork intestines), napjak mandu (flat dumplings), jjimgalbi (spicy braised short ribs), and nureun guksu (local noodles). Below are three places that appeared in travel videos and Korean TV shows.

Places to Visit

Seomun Market

A traditional market and an easy place to try several Daegu specialties in one stop. Look for napjak mandu, thin flat dumplings, and nureun guksu, a local noodle dish. In the evening the market also hosts a night market. It was featured in the Korean show "Welcome, First Time in Korea?", where Vilppu from Finland worked his way through napjak mandu, tteokbokki, and noodles, and in the "Seomun Market Daegu Travel Vlog."

Halmae Mukjip (Dalseo-gu, Daegu)

A small shop serving buckwheat jelly soup (memil mukchae) and acorn jelly soup (dotori mukchae), in which strips of jelly are served in broth. It appeared in Episode 10 (Daegu) of Baek Jong-won's market show, which introduced it as a jelly shop that has been in business for 56 years without a single table.

Palgongsan Wishing Rock (Sowon Bawi)

A rock on Palgongsan where visitors come to make a wish. It makes a calm break between food stops. Vilppu's Daegu trip in Episode 173 of "Welcome, First Time in Korea?" carries the title "Please let me eat all 10 flavors of Daegu," which fits the spirit of a wish-making visit.

Route Tip

Since the Wishing Rock is on a mountain, it is easiest to go there first during daylight. Then head to Halmae Mukjip in Dalseo-gu for a light meal of jelly soup, and finish at Seomun Market in the evening, where you can try napjak mandu and noodles before browsing the night market. Check each location on a map in advance and allow plenty of travel time between stops.
